Denture Repairs | Broken Denture | Denture Snapped | Dropped Denture

"My denture has broken, what can i do?" dentures can break from time to time and there are various factors that we do as humans that can contribute to dentures breaking. Denture repairs can cost from £45 - £50.

Dentures can be broken if they are dropped due to the impact snapping the hard plastic acrylic, being acrylic its a type of plastic, if you use boiling water to clean your dentures (i hope not) this can cause your dentures to wrap. Also excessive bleaching with a denture cleaner ( use a ultra sonic instead) can alter the properties of the dentures and looses its pink pigmentation causing it to become brittle and break more easily. Eating habits e.g chewing on chicken bones, this causes minor stress points on the hard acrylic, imagine putting your two index fingers together at the tips and push together, its the same principal here. 

Sometimes there are underlying conditions that need a dental professional to see. You may have an area under your denture on your top jaw which is squidgy at the front  (flabby ridge) this area is mobile and moves around which causes the denture to be unstable , it creates minor stress on the underneath of the denture due to nature of that area flexing, this will most certainly cause denture fractures or repeated fractures.

Another common reason is when the patient has natural lower teeth at the front but nothing at the back and has complete top denture. When the patient eats, they will use the lower front teeth to crush food between the denture as they have nothing at back, this creates a pivoting action and places stress in that area and if it is consistent enough it will create the squidgy area as discussed above.

The best thing to do is not glue them together, this adds a layer in between your denture that can sometimes not be put together properly and cause it not to fit. This will feel different in your mouth due the change by adding another layer, imagine two bricks with cement in the middle, your dentures should be two bricks together touching without any cement. This basically stops the broken pieces locating together and may do more damage than good.

If they are glued together your clinician may refuse to repair your denture as they will not be able to locate them and any repair done from a glued denture will always be inferior. If the denture is broken without glue, this should be okay to fix and should usually take about 45 minutes to an hour. 

I know what your thinking, my local dental lab can do it in 20 minutes, ill put it this way, it takes 10 minutes to disinfect, 5 minutes to prepare, 10 minutes to repair, 5 minutes to trim and 5 minutes to polish and another 2 - 5 minutes to check the quality. Also the technician who is repairing your denture will have to stop their ever day work load to focus on your denture repair which can be done if they are not to busy.
