Professionally speaking dentures should last between 5 - 12 years. As would be appreciated there are many other factors that we do as humans that can influence how long dentures last for. How many years the dentures last for is called the longevity of the product and truly depends on the quality of materials used and the skill and understanding of the clinician and technician. This brings me back to my last post about prices, if you pay cheaper for your product you will have cheaper materials used in accordance with the price.
Dentures are a acrylic material and can be broken if dropped, wrapped and so forth, even cleaning the dentures with a denture cleaner can be detrimental to dentures as it bleaches the pink pigment colour of dentures creating a whitish colour thus making the dentures brittle over a period of time as the chemical properties are altered and lost its balance (tip: keep your dentures clean use an ultra sonic). Other factors that influence the longevity of dentures: Dropped on the floor or water basin, boiled with hot water, accidentally sat on or the dog using it as a chew toy (which is more common than you think). If you have a partial acrylic denture and you are prone to break them easily, you may want to consider a flexible denture which is made out of a nylon material and is virtually unbreakable (click here to find out more). With higher priced dentures the quality of materials increases, the acrylic usually used is a high impact acrylic. High impact acrylic does what is says and absorbs higher impacts e.g dropping on the floor, it withstands a higher force than regular acrylic but do not think this will be the end to your dentures breaking, there are many factors that influence the longevity, the one that comes to mind is eating chicken bones which is sharp, hard and can create pressure points on the denture to snap. Swissedent are confident that are dentures will last and we offer a 5 year guarantee on all Swissedent Dentures.
