How to keep your dentures clean?

Keeping your dentures clean is one of the most important things you can do for your comfort, confidence, and long term oral health. At The Swissedent Denture Clinic, we see every week how proper denture care makes the difference between a bright, fresh smile and sore gums, bad odour, or loose fitting dentures. The good news is that keeping your dentures clean is not complicated. With the right routine and a bit of consistency, it becomes second nature, just like brushing your natural teeth used to be.

In this guide, we will explain clearly and simply how to clean your dentures properly, why it matters, and what mistakes to avoid. As a London based, clinician led denture clinic, we combine clinical training with years of hands on experience to make sure the advice we give is practical, safe, and based on real patient outcomes.

Why Cleaning Your Dentures Matters More Than You Think
Dentures may not get cavities, but they absolutely collect plaque, bacteria, and food debris. If not cleaned properly, this build up can lead to bad breath, gum infections, oral thrush, staining, and irritation. Poor denture hygiene is one of the most common causes of sore spots and inflamed gum tissue.

Your mouth is still living tissue. Even if you wear full dentures, your gums need to stay healthy. If you wear partial dentures, your remaining natural teeth are at even greater risk if plaque is not controlled. Bacteria can sit around clasps and connectors, increasing the chance of decay or gum disease.

Clean dentures also look better. Tea, coffee, red wine, and smoking can all stain the acrylic over time. Daily care helps maintain the natural appearance of your smile.

At The Swissedent Denture Clinic, we design dentures to fit comfortably and look natural. Keeping them clean protects that investment and keeps your smile fresh.

How Often Should You Clean Your Dentures
Dentures should be cleaned at least twice a day. Ideally, you clean them in the morning and at night, just like natural teeth. Cleaning after meals is even better if possible, especially if food tends to get trapped.

Before bed is particularly important. Wearing unclean dentures overnight increases the risk of infections such as denture stomatitis. Your gums also benefit from a rest. In most cases, we recommend removing your dentures at night unless we have specifically advised otherwise for clinical reasons.

Consistency is more important than perfection. A simple daily routine done properly will protect your dentures and your mouth.

Step by Step Guide to Cleaning Your Dentures
  1. Start by removing your dentures carefully over a sink filled with water or over a folded towel. Dentures are strong in your mouth but surprisingly fragile if dropped onto a hard surface.
  2. Rinse them under lukewarm running water to remove loose food particles. Avoid hot water as this can warp the acrylic and affect the fit.
  3. Use a soft denture brush or a soft toothbrush. Apply a non abrasive denture cleaner or mild soap. Regular toothpaste is often too abrasive and can create microscopic scratches. These tiny scratches trap bacteria and stains over time.
  4. Brush all surfaces gently but thoroughly. Pay attention to the inside surface that sits against your gums. This area collects plaque and needs careful cleaning.
  5. Rinse thoroughly before placing them back in your mouth or soaking them overnight.
  6. If you are using denture adhesive, make sure you remove all residue from both the denture and your gums. Adhesive build up can affect fit and hygiene.

Soaking Your Dentures Overnight
Soaking dentures in a proper denture cleaning solution overnight helps disinfect and remove stains. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and avoid bleach unless specifically advised. Bleach can damage metal components in partial dentures and weaken acrylic over time.

After soaking, rinse thoroughly before wearing them again.

If you are unsure which product is suitable for your dentures, especially if they are implant retained or have metal frameworks, we can advise you at The Swissedent Denture Clinic.

Do Not Forget Your Gums and Tongue
Even if you wear full dentures, you still need to clean your mouth. Use a soft toothbrush to gently brush your gums, tongue, and the roof of your mouth. This stimulates circulation and removes bacteria.

If you wear partial dentures, continue brushing and flossing your natural teeth as advised by your dental professional.
Healthy gums mean better denture comfort and longer lasting results.

Common Mistakes We See in Clinic
One common mistake is using hot water. Heat can permanently change the shape of your denture.
Another mistake is using regular toothpaste with whitening agents. These products are designed for enamel and are too abrasive for acrylic.

Some patients skip cleaning altogether if they feel tired. Bacteria do not take days off. A quick clean is better than none.
We also see dentures damaged by DIY adjustments or harsh chemicals. If your denture feels loose, rubs, or smells even after cleaning, do not attempt home fixes. A professional review is always safer.

What About Denture Odour
If your dentures smell unpleasant even after cleaning, this usually indicates bacterial build up in microscopic pores or a possible fungal infection. Soaking alone may not solve the issue.

At The Swissedent Denture Clinic, we offer professional denture cleaning and polishing services. We can deep clean and refresh your dentures safely, helping restore freshness and appearance.

Persistent odour may also signal that your denture is old and needs replacing. Most dentures last several years, but they do not last forever. Over time, wear and changes in your gum shape can affect fit and hygiene.

How Often Should Dentures Be Replaced
On average, dentures should be reviewed annually and may need replacing every five to ten years depending on wear and changes in your mouth.

If your denture becomes loose, causes sore spots, or frequently traps food, it may need adjustment, relining, or replacement. Proper cleaning extends its lifespan but does not stop natural changes in your gums and bone structure.

Regular check ups at a specialist denture clinic ensure small problems are caught early.

Special Advice for Implant Retained Dentures
If you wear implant retained dentures, cleaning becomes even more important. Implants require careful hygiene to prevent inflammation around the implant posts.

We will provide tailored advice for your specific design. Implant dentures often require special brushes or water irrigation tools to keep the area clean.

Never ignore bleeding or swelling around implant attachments. Early intervention protects your long term investment.

When to Seek Professional Help
If you experience redness, burning, white patches in the mouth, persistent bad breath, or discomfort, book a clinical review. These may be signs of infection or denture related irritation.

At The Swissedent Denture Clinic, we are led by a qualified Clinical Dental Technician. This means your dentures are designed, fitted, and reviewed by a clinician who understands both the technical and biological aspects of denture care.
We combine clinical training, modern techniques, and years of hands on experience to provide safe, reliable advice. Our goal is not just to give you dentures, but to support you in maintaining them comfortably for years to come.

A Clean Denture Is a Confident Smile
Keeping your dentures clean protects your health, your comfort, and your confidence. A fresh denture feels better, looks better, and smells better. It also reduces the risk of infections and costly repairs.

The routine is simple. Clean twice daily. Use the right products. Soak overnight. Clean your gums. Avoid hot water and harsh chemicals. Attend regular reviews.

If you are unsure whether you are cleaning your dentures correctly, or if you would like a professional clean, reline, or denture check up, contact The Swissedent Denture Clinic today. We are here to help you smile comfortably and confidently.
