Ill fitting dentures? Why does it happens and why you are not alone

If your dentures feel loose, sore, click when you talk, or make eating feel like a competitive sport, you are not imagining things. Ill fitting dentures are incredibly common, even with dentures that were once comfortable and well made. At Swissedent Denture Clinic, we see patients every week who think something has gone wrong or that they must need a completely new set of dentures. In many cases, the solution is far simpler, more cost effective, and far less disruptive. A denture reline.

Dentures do not fail overnight. Your mouth changes gradually, often without you realising. Bone shrinks, gums remodel, and soft tissue compresses. Your denture, however, stays exactly the same shape. Over time, that once snug fit becomes loose, unstable, or painful. This is not poor hygiene or bad luck. It is biology doing what biology does.
Why dentures become loose over time
After teeth are removed, the jawbone no longer receives stimulation from natural roots. As a result, the bone slowly resorbs, meaning it shrinks in height and width. This happens to everyone, although the rate varies. Weight changes, general health, medications, and age all play a role.

As the bone and gums change shape, the denture no longer matches the contours of your mouth. Think of it like wearing shoes that once fit perfectly but now feel sloppy because your feet have changed shape. The denture has not worn out, but the foundation beneath it has.

This leads to common complaints such as soreness, ulcers, denture movement, food trapping underneath, speech changes, and reliance on denture adhesive. If you are using more and more fixative just to get through the day, that is often a sign the fit needs attention.

New dentures are not always the answer
Many patients assume that loose dentures automatically mean starting again from scratch. While new dentures are sometimes necessary, especially if the teeth are worn or the bite is incorrect, this is not always the case.

If the denture teeth are still in good condition, the bite is correct, and the overall shape and appearance suit you, then replacing the entire denture may be unnecessary. This is where a denture reline comes in.

A reline improves the fit of your existing denture by reshaping the surface that sits against your gums. The visible teeth and outer shape remain the same, but the contact surface is updated to match your current mouth.

What exactly is a denture reline
A denture reline is a procedure that refits the base of your denture to the current shape of your gums and jaw. It restores stability, comfort, and function without changing how your denture looks.

There are two main types of relines, soft relines and hard relines. The most appropriate option depends on your mouth, your denture, and your comfort needs. At Swissedent Denture Clinic, we assess this clinically rather than using a one size fits all approach.

A soft reline uses a cushioning material that remains slightly flexible. This is often helpful for patients with sore gums, thin tissues, or areas of sensitivity. A hard reline uses a durable acrylic material similar to the original denture base and provides long term stability.

The patient experience. What happens during a reline appointment
From a patient perspective, a denture reline is straightforward and far less involved than making new dentures. The process usually begins with a clinical assessment where we examine the fit, check pressure areas, assess your bite, and confirm that a reline is appropriate.

We then take an impression inside your existing denture. This impression captures the exact shape of your gums as they are today. You bite together gently so the denture seats in the correct position. This step is quick and comfortable.

Depending on the type of reline, this can be completed on the same day or processed in our laboratory. Because Swissedent Denture Clinic combines clinical care with on site technical expertise, turnaround times are efficient and controlled.

Once the reline is completed, the denture is checked in your mouth. We assess stability, comfort, bite, and speech. Minor adjustments are made to ensure a natural feel. Most patients notice an immediate improvement.

The technical side. What happens behind the scenes
This is where experience really matters. A denture reline is not just adding material. It requires precision, understanding of occlusion, and knowledge of how dentures behave under function.

In the laboratory, the impression inside the denture is used to create a new master model. The old fitting surface of the denture is carefully reduced to make space for the new material. This must be done evenly to avoid altering the bite.

The denture is then processed using high quality dental acrylic or reline material, cured under controlled conditions to ensure strength, accuracy, and longevity. Shrinkage control is critical. Poorly processed relines can distort the denture or create pressure points.

Once finished, the surface is polished to a smooth, hygienic finish that is gentle on the gums. At Swissedent, all relines are completed by qualified dental technicians who specialise in removable prosthetics. This technical expertise is one of the reasons our relines last and feel natural.

How a reline improves comfort, stability, and confidence
A well executed reline restores suction and stability. This means less movement, better chewing efficiency, clearer speech, and reduced sore spots. Many patients find they no longer need denture adhesive, or only use it occasionally.

Because the denture fits properly again, pressure is distributed evenly across the gums. This reduces inflammation and helps protect the underlying tissues. Eating becomes more enjoyable and social situations feel less stressful.

There is also a psychological benefit. When dentures move or click, people become self conscious. A secure denture restores confidence, which shows in how you speak, smile, and interact.

When a reline is not enough
Honesty is a key part of our approach. A reline is not a cure all. If the denture teeth are severely worn, the bite has collapsed, or the denture is cracked or poorly designed, a new denture may be the better option.

We will always explain this clearly and show you why. Our aim is not to sell you something you do not need, but to give you the most appropriate solution for long term comfort and oral health.

Why experience matters with denture relines
Relines may sound simple, but poor technique can make things worse. Over relining, under relining, incorrect bite registration, or cheap materials can lead to pain, instability, and frustration.

At Swissedent Denture Clinic, dentures are our specialty. We work exclusively with removable prosthetics and understand both the clinical and technical aspects. This integrated approach is what allows us to deliver predictable results.

Our clinicians and technicians work together, using modern materials and proven techniques. This is part of our commitment to high standards, patient safety, and evidence based care.
