At The Swissedent Denture Clinic in London, we are often asked about flexible dentures. Many patients come to us specifically asking for a Valplast flexible denture because they have heard that it is thinner, more comfortable and more natural looking. And in many cases, that is absolutely true. However, flexible dentures are not suitable for everyone. As Clinical Dental Technicians providing bespoke dentures directly to patients across London and the UK, our responsibility is not to sell you what sounds good. Our responsibility is to assess your mouth properly and recommend what is clinically appropriate, long lasting and safe for you. In this article, we will explain what a Valplast flexible denture is, the benefits, the material itself, and most importantly why you may not be suitable for one. What Is a Valplast Flexible Denture
A flexible denture, often made from the brand Valplast, is a removable partial denture made from a nylon based thermoplastic material rather than traditional acrylic or metal. Valplast dentures are typically around 1.5mm thick in many areas, making them thinner and lighter than conventional acrylic dentures. The material is flexible rather than rigid, allowing it to adapt slightly to the natural contours of your gums and undercuts. Unlike traditional dentures that may use metal clasps, flexible dentures use gum coloured flexible clasps that blend more naturally with your tissue. This makes them particularly popular for patients who are concerned about visible metal when smiling. They are used mainly as partial dentures where some natural teeth remain. The Benefits of Flexible Dentures There are genuine benefits to Valplast flexible dentures when used in the right situation.
Now we come to the important part. Flexible dentures have limitations, and not every mouth is suited to them. If you have advanced gum disease or mobile teeth, a flexible denture may not be appropriate. Flexible clasps rely on engaging existing teeth for retention. If those teeth are weak or moving, the denture may place additional stress on them. If you have significant bone loss, especially in the lower jaw, a flexible denture may lack the rigidity needed for proper support. In these cases, a more structured design such as a cobalt chrome denture may provide better long term stability. If you require significant bite correction, flexible dentures are often not ideal. Because the material is flexible, it does not provide the same rigid support as metal based dentures. In patients with heavy bites or grinding habits, the movement of the flexible base can affect chewing efficiency and longevity. If you need a full denture, flexible is generally not the correct material. Valplast is primarily designed for partial dentures. Full dentures require proper suction and border control, which is best achieved with rigid acrylic bases. If you require future adjustments, additions or relines, flexible dentures can be more limited. Adding extra teeth to a flexible denture can be more complex compared to acrylic. Relining flexible material is also more restricted and may require specialist processes. If you have very high aesthetic expectations around tooth positioning and gum contouring, flexible dentures have certain technical limitations. While the base material is aesthetic, it does not allow the same level of fine control in some aspects of design compared to conventional dentures. If you have very limited space between your upper and lower teeth, the 1.5mm thickness, although thin, may still not be suitable depending on your bite. Finally, if you are looking for a long term definitive solution in a complex case, flexible dentures may not always be the most biomechanically sound option. In some cases, a cobalt chrome framework offers better distribution of forces and protects your remaining teeth more effectively. Common Misconceptions About Flexible Dentures Many patients believe flexible dentures are better in every situation. That is simply not true.
Our job is to prevent that. When Flexible Dentures Are a Good Option Despite the limitations, flexible dentures can be an excellent choice in the right case.
